Siding is the one exterior job where the material choice genuinely changes the outcome, and where the installation details matter more than the material.

Wind out here doesn’t just push on a wall, it finds the gap behind the corner trim and works at it. We spend as much time on house wrap, flashing and J-channel as we do on the panels, because that’s where failed siding jobs actually fail.

Where siding actually fails House wrap, flashing and trim — the details behind the panel decide whether it lasts ten years or thirty.

What usually goes wrong with siding

Siding almost never fails in the middle of a wall. It fails at the openings, the corners and the fasteners — which is where we spend most of our time on an install.

  • Panels warping, buckling or waving along a wall

Either moisture has gotten in behind and swelled the sheathing, or the siding was nailed too tight to move. Every siding material expands and contracts through a South Dakota temperature swing; pin it down and it has to go somewhere.

  • Chalky, washed-out color — worst on the south and west walls

UV breaking down the finish. How fast this happens is almost entirely down to the paint system: a good PVDF finish holds 30–40 years, the cheaper polyester finishes visibly less. This is the difference hiding between two quotes that look the same.

  • A soft or spongy spot in the wall under the panel Don’t wait on this one

Water has been getting past the flashing at a window, door or corner and sitting in the sheathing. By the time it’s soft from outside, the repair is structural rather than cosmetic.

  • Gaps opening at corners, trim or around windows

Wind out here doesn’t just push on a wall, it finds the gap behind a corner trim and works at it all winter. Once the seal is open, wind-driven rain and snow follow it straight in.

  • Heating bills climbing with nothing else changed

On an older house the wall cavity is often where the heat goes. Siding alone won’t fix that, but a re-side is the one moment when adding insulation or moving to an insulated panel costs a fraction of what it would cost on its own.

No surprises

What a siding job includes

Beyond the panels themselves — this is the part that separates a ten-year job from a thirty-year one.

  • Tear-off and sheathing inspection

Old siding comes off and we look at what is behind it. Rot around windows and at the base of walls is extremely common and it’s much cheaper to fix now than later.

  • House wrap, taped

A proper weather-resistive barrier with the seams taped and shingle-lapped. Not staple-gunned and torn. This is your actual water barrier — the siding is the rain screen in front of it.

  • Window and door flashing

Head flashing and sill pans where they belong. Water that gets behind a window and has nowhere to go is the number one source of hidden rot in this climate.

  • Insulation options

Rigid foam or insulated vinyl backing if you want the wall performance improved while it’s open. Worth pricing when you’re already paying for the labor.

  • Trim, corners and soffit

Corner posts, window and door surrounds, frieze, soffit and fascia. Mismatched trim is what makes a siding job look cheap from the street.

  • Color-matched accessories

Vents, blocks, lights and utility penetrations trimmed out properly rather than cut around.

  • Full site clean-up

Old siding hauled, nails and offcuts swept, landscaping protected while we work.

Your options

Siding we install

We’re a certified LP SmartSide installer and we install James Hardie, premium vinyl and steel. Here’s the honest comparison.

LP SmartSide

Our default recommendation

Engineered wood. Takes a nail like real lumber, holds paint beautifully, and handles impact far better than fiber cement — which matters in hail country. Deep grain, wide board options. 50-year limited warranty.

James Hardie fiber cement

Best finish

The premium look, and non-combustible. Very stable, very long-lived, holds ColorPlus finish for decades. It’s heavy and brittle, so installation matters more — and it will chip under severe hail where SmartSide dents.

Insulated vinyl

Best value

Modern insulated vinyl isn’t the vinyl people remember. Rigid foam backing gives it a solid feel, improves the wall R-value, and it never needs painting. The best value per square foot by a distance.

Steel

Toughest

Effectively impervious to hail, which is why we recommend it on exposed acreages and on the storm-side elevation of houses that keep getting hit. Higher cost, limited profile options.

How it goes

Start to finish, with nobody chasing you

  1. 1

    Free estimate

We measure, look at the existing condition, and talk through what you want the house to look like.

  2. 2

    Samples against your house

Color looks completely different on a chip than on a wall in daylight. We bring boards out and hold them up.

  3. 3

    Written line-item quote

Panels, trim, wrap, labor, disposal — and any rot repair called out as a separate allowance so there are no surprises.

  4. 4

    Install

Typically 3–7 days for a full house, depending on size, material and how much repair we find behind the old siding.

  5. 5

    Walk-through

We walk the whole exterior with you, fix anything you flag, and hand over the warranty.

Straight answers

Siding — straight answers

If the question you have isn’t here, call the number on this page and ask. You’ll get a person who has been on a roof this week.

LP SmartSide or James Hardie?

In hail country, usually SmartSide. It takes an impact and dents where Hardie chips, it’s lighter and easier to install correctly, and it holds paint superbly. Hardie wins on finish quality, on fire resistance, and on very long-term dimensional stability. We’ll price both and tell you which one we would put on our own house.

Can you side just one elevation?

Yes, and after a storm it’s often what the insurance scope covers. The honest caveat is that matching existing siding that has weathered for ten years is difficult, and sometimes impossible if the line has been discontinued. We’ll show you what the match looks like before you commit.

Will new siding lower my heating bill?

A little on its own. Meaningfully if you add rigid foam or choose insulated vinyl while the wall is open. Anyone quoting you a specific percentage is guessing.

Do I have to repaint it?

Vinyl and steel, never. SmartSide and Hardie come pre-finished and typically hold color 15–25 years before they want a repaint. Site-painted wood is the only one on a real maintenance cycle.

What if you find rot behind the old siding?

We photograph it, show you, and price the repair before we do it. There’s a rot allowance line in your quote for exactly this reason — it’s common enough that pretending it won’t happen is dishonest.

Does insurance cover siding?

If hail or wind damaged it, usually yes — and it’s frequently missed in the first adjuster scope because everyone is looking at the roof. We check every elevation, including the screens and the soft metal, and document it.

I highly recommend these guys! They did two complete exterior remodels for me (siding, roof, soffit, gutters) on a couple of older houses and made them look brand new. They were available to start within a reasonable timeframe and got these big jobs done within a week. Gunner is great to work with and keeps you in the loop along the way. They’re now my first call for our exterior house projects.
