Matt runs Marshall. Not a call center.

Southwest Minnesota’s worst storms come in on straight-line wind — 80 to 100 mph from Wentworth to Marshall in 2011 — plus the freeze-thaw that opens up valleys and flashing every March.

That’s the reason we keep an office here rather than covering Lyon County from three hours away. Matt answers the phone, quotes the job, and is the person you call in two years if something needs looking at.

What roofs actually look like in Marshall

July 1, 2011 and July 19, 2017

In 2011 a supercell rolled out of South Dakota and caused widespread wind damage of 80 to 100 mph from Wentworth all the way to Marshall, with hail up to tennis-ball size — two and a half inches — and tornadoes in Tyler and Ruthton. In 2017 a storm that started in northwestern South Dakota put 83 mph through Huron, then dropped two brief tornadoes south of Marshall that pushed local winds to near 100 mph and tore up storage buildings, machine sheds and grain bins.

Mostly 1960s-through-2000s houses

The median house in Marshall was built in 1977, and only about one in eight goes back before 1940. Roughly seven in ten were built between 1960 and 2009, so most tear-offs here are plywood decks on a first or second replacement. The part that varies is the attic: what was vented, how, and whether anybody kept up with it.

Minnesota has more paperwork, and it’s there for a reason

Marshall requires a permit for any work on the roof, and a reroof application has to spell out the roof type, the slope and the attic ventilation. The job has to be finished within six months of starting. Minnesota also requires roofers to be licensed. The license number belongs on your contract, and the contractor has to show it to pull the permit. You can check any roofer’s license with the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry before you sign.

I highly recommend these guys! They did two complete exterior remodels for me (siding, roof, soffit, gutters) on a couple of older houses and made them look brand new. They were available to start within a reasonable timeframe and got these big jobs done within a week. Gunner is great to work with and keeps you in the loop along the way. They’re now my first call for our exterior house projects.

Gary and his team were prompt and friendly. Gary reviewed our storm damage - he is knowledgeable and honest. His team did a great job and left our property clean. I recommend Gary and Radiant Roofing and Siding - in fact, I recommended him to my neighbors.

Troy did an excellent job during our roof and siding inspection. He was punctual, knowledgeable, and very easy to work with. We truly appreciated his help as new home owners. What stood out most was how communicative he was throughout the process and how well everything was organized and explained. We’re very happy with the experience we had with Radiant Roofing & Solutions.

Straight answers

Roofing in Marshall — straight answers

If your question isn’t here, call Matt at 605.496.9595 and ask. You’ll get a person who has been on a roof this week.

Do you actually have an office in Marshall?

Yes — 109 S 5th St, Marshall, MN 56258, open mon–sat, 8am–6pm. Matt runs this side of the territory and answers 605.496.9595 himself. It matters after a storm, when half the trucks on your street have out-of-state plates and will be gone by fall.

How fast can someone look at my roof in Marshall?

Usually same day, and at the latest within about 48 hours. Active leaks jump the line — if water is coming into the house right now, call 605.496.9595 instead of filling out a form and we’ll get something over it today.

What kind of damage do you actually see around Marshall?

Wind first. The storms that have done real damage in Marshall came in on straight-line wind, with a brief tornado or two riding along. What that leaves is shingles that lost their seal and got folded back, lifted ridge cap, and flashing pulled loose — and then winter gets into whatever the wind opened up. A roof here has to handle both, and the attic decides a lot of how the winter half goes.

Do you cover Tracy, Balaton, Cottonwood as well?

Yes — and everywhere else in Lyon County and the towns around it. Tracy, Balaton, Cottonwood, Ghent, Lynd are all regular stops. The town list is a set of examples, not a boundary; if you’re within about an hour of Marshall we’re there.

What does an estimate cost, and is there a catch?

Nothing, and no. You get a roof inspection with photographs and a line-itemized written quote you can put side by side with anyone else's. If we think you have five more years in the roof you have, we’ll tell you that instead — it happens often enough that we would rather say it up front.

Will you work with my insurance company?

Matt will meet your adjuster on the roof and walk the damage with them, which is the part that changes outcomes. We can’t file the claim for you — that has to come from you — but we’ll tell you honestly whether you have one worth filing before you pick up the phone.
