It’s an ice town. Something like 49 inches of snow a year and a hundred-plus freeze-thaw cycles mean the thing that kills a roof here usually isn’t one storm — it’s February. Meltwater runs down a warm roof, hits the cold overhang, freezes, and backs up under the shingles. The leak shows up on the ceiling in March and the homeowner blames the shingles, which are usually fine. It’s the attic. ### Which is why the membrane matters more here North Dakota is Climate Zone 6, and the residential code requires ice-and-water membrane running from the eave to at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall line. Twenty-four inches is a minimum, not a target — on a low-pitch roof with a deep overhang it is not enough, and we run it further. Fargo requires a permit for a roof replacement and we pull it as a matter of course. ### North Fargo and south Fargo are different jobs North Fargo, Oak Grove, Hawthorne and Roosevelt are the old stock — early twentieth century, steep, cut up, with small attics that were never insulated for what we now ask of them. A large share of our ice-dam calls come from those four neighborhoods. South and west it flips: Osgood, Rose Creek, Timber Creek, Horace and West Fargo are newer and better insulated, and mostly need us for wind and the occasional hail. Hail does come — the valley gets a real severe season, and anything at an inch or over starts taking function off an asphalt shingle. But if you are calling us in Fargo, it is close to even odds the answer is ventilation rather than a new roof.
